History
The BHLC was conceived in October 2001 as a community based school reform initiative in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District and supported through the generosity of the Annenberg Foundation. The grant initiative focused on Breed Street Elementary School and community based organizations in Boyle Heights. As a five year initiative under Families in Schools, the BHLC grant period ended June 30, 2006. In August 2005 the BHLC Steering Committee made a renewed commitment to advance the BHLC from being a program initiative to becoming an independent nonprofit organization to carry on its mission past the grant period.
Given the BHLC’s history and focus, the organization applies a deep knowledge of its local context to customize its strategies. Additional organizational features and core values uniquely position the BHLC to create a strong civic environment for school reform.
