Aliso-Pico Joint Use Project with New Schools Better Neighborhoods
Wednesday, August 9 2006

New Schools Better Neighborhoods (NSBN), in partnership with Councilman Jose Huizar, Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa and other city officials, and the BHLC are planning the co-location and funding of a new joint-use community center adjacent to the new high school in Boyle Heights (First Street and Gabriel Garcia Marquez). As part of the 1st Street corridor now under development by the Housing Authority and LAUSD with new public housing and East Los Angeles High School # 1, this proposed joint use project will bring vital community services that are needed in the immediate Aliso-Pico neighborhood. The BHLC and NSBN are working to bring together community partners who have existing direct involvement in the community, or are needed to provide the community-desired programs and/or services. The specific development objectives of this project are to create a new 2-story community center to include:

  • A child care center & increased childcare capacity
  • An early education center
  • Adult education and job training
  • Teen services
  • A clean up facility of storm water runoff from the 101 Freeway
A previous informational forum was held in the spring where NSBN presented the details of the project to community organizations, leaders, policy research institutes and elected officials. Additional community meetings will be held in the near future to expand the dialogue about the project to more stakeholders.
