BHLC Steering Committee - September 13, 2006 Wednesday, September 13 2006
The BHLC Steering Committee convened community stakeholders and education leaders for the purposes of sharing the progress of BHLC education reform efforts in the community, highlighting the immediate challenges our schools face in order to contribute effectively to their improvement, and to introduce new members who can support the shared vision of increasing academic achievement in Boyle Heights.
In attendance were Roosevelt School Family principals, community leaders, LAUSD School Board member Monica Garcia, LAPD Hollenbeck Division Department Community Relations Officer, East Los Angeles College, California State University, Los Angeles Office of Student Affairs and the office of Los Angeles City Councilmember, Jose Huizar.
Agenda items included:
- Community leaders and organizations coordinating services.
- Crime, gang and community safety issues within Boyle Heights.
- Gang prevention efforts.
- Accomplishments of the Principals and community leaders retreat in August of 2006.
- The community's role in the selection of a new LAUSD Superintendent.
- Details and goals of the Give Kids Good Schools national campaign.
- English Learners and Reclassification – the BHLC policy brief focus
- BHLC Task Force planning (Civic Engagement Task Force, Student Leadership Task force, Parent Engagement Task Force.)
