Schwarzenegger, Villaraigosa and Nunez visit Breed St Elementary
Saturday, May 20 2006

On Saturday May 20th we received a visit from AB 127 due to the recognized success of the Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Speaker of the Assembly Fabian Nunez. The Governor's office requested Breed Street as the location for the signing of SOS student leadership program and kindly congratulated our students for making great progress as leaders in their community and for promoting a positive culture of learning. Our SOS students were very excited as they met our elected officials and watched the Governor sign and place the bond on the November ballot. AB127 is the Strategic Growth Plan education proposal which authorizes the placement of a $10.4 billion general obligation bond to fund K-12 and Higher Education on the November 2006 ballot.

The SOS (Society of Students) is a unique strategy which guides elementary school students in Boyle Heights public schools to strengthen student character and resiliency before entering the middle school years. A recent study showed the program to benefit both academic achievement and social behavior. SOS is a program of the Boyle Heights Learning Collaborative. The program receives support from the Annenberg Foundation though the Boyle Heights Learning Collaborative, an initiative created with the Los Angeles Unified School District, Breed Street Elementary School and Families in Schools.

"Our children deserve to go to safe, modern and uncrowded schools," said Governor Schwarzenegger at the bill signing ceremony at Breed Street Elementary School in Los Angeles. "The education bond will finance urgently needed infrastructure projects throughout California's education system.

In attendance were also City of Los Angeles Councilman Jose Huizar, School Board President Marlene Canter, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell and a team of legislators.
