The Hispanic Scholarship Fund Steps for Success Saturdays Program - Oct. 28th
Saturday, October 28 2006

As the BHLC has fostered a partnership with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, BHLC staff members participated in the Hispanic Scholarship Fund's 1st Steps for Success Saturdays program which tool place on Oct. 28th, 2006. The BHLC was involved by helping to facilitate parent workshops in Spanish titled "Preparando sus estudiantes para la universisdad" (Preparing Your Students for College). The main topics of the presentation were having access to A-G coursework, College test prep tips (PSAT, SAT, ACT, and SAT II), researching colleges and universities, speaking with school counselors about college applications and applying for financial aid.

In addition, BHLC staff members also facilitated student workshops titled "Writing Personal Statements" in an effort to assist students with the college application process as it pertains to writing personal essays. The event concluded with a college fair as college recruiters from various California schools and universities helped answer questions about the application process. 200 parents and students were in attendance.

As the BHLC continues to be involved in efforts to help more Latino high school students become college and university eligible, such as through the implementation and access of A-G coursework, it is also important that the BHLC participates in efforts to help students and parents with the college application process and financial aid.
