Civic Engagement
The BHLC approaches education reform as a community enterprise and links schools, parents, students and community organizations to work together towards the collective vision of higher academic achievement in Boyle Heights public schools. Some key activities include the BHLC Task Forces, Parent Education Summit, ELL Policy Initiative, Joint Use Project with New Schools Better Neighborhoods, Feria del Libro, Health Initiatives, A-G Curriculum Implementation.
ELL Policy Initiative
To author and publish a policy brief related to EL students and reclassification rates in the K-12 schools in BH. It will inform Parents, School District officials, State Officials with recommendations on how to better support teachers, students, principals, parents in order to improve reclassification rates & student learning.
A-G Implementation
The members of the CEE met to produce an action plan to move forward with A-G implementation. On July 25th, 2006, members of the CEE held a meeting with LAUSD School Board President Marlene Canter to discuss the fact that although the District has made policy recommendations to implement A-G curriculum, progress has been too slow and immediate steps must be taken in order to meet the goal of having every student A-G eligible by 2008 and onward.
NSBN Joint Use Project
To build community support for the construction of a 2-story joint use center along the 1st Street corridor. This proposed joint use project will bring vital community services that are needed in the immediate Aliso-Pico neighborhood.
Feria del Libro
A community-wide event promoting a culture of literacy at home and academic achievement at school, where quality, culturally-relevant books are available to children of all ages and their families.
Million Word Challenge
A community-wide literacy campaign promoting a culture of literacy at home and academic achievement at school, culminating at the Feria del Libro. The campaign helps students to read MILLIONS of WORDS, outside of the classroom so that students who achieve the highest can receive recognition at the book fair.
BHLC Civic Engagement Task Force
Integrates resources and counsel for the planning and delivery of Civic Engagement activities (financial or human resources). Also support relationships with businesses, government and media groups. Some campaigns are A-G, ELL policy brief, MWC, Feria del Libro, Joint Use Project, housing and Transportation issues, sponsoring community events and summits.
BHLC Steering Committee
It is presently comprised of 35 member organizations that purposefully join forces in working towards the collective vision for higher academic achievement in Boyle Heights.
Health Initiatives
To promote health education programs and for community members as well as promote current services through Healthy Start. The objective is to provide access to health care as well as information to intervention programs for Diabetes, Obesity and heart disease.
Give Kids Good Schools
To inform parents and students about the governance structure of the public school system, to educate parents on how to engage all major decision makers in K-12 schools, to become familiar with the School Board
