Community Action for Central Region Middle School 9 Tuesday, November 28 2006
BHLC helped organize parents to speak on behalf of the Boyle Heights community regarding the proposal to repurpose Sunrise Elementary School to be constructed as a new state of the art middle school providing 1,026 new seats. This new middle school will reduce overcrowding at Hollenbeck, Stevenson, and Griffith middle schools without sacrificing homes or businesses. Both students and teachers will be provided with the opportunity to relocate to near by elementary schools, and students will be able to remain in their community when they attend middle school.
The BHLC, along with several parents and community leaders attended the November 28th School Board meeting to provide public comments in support of this measure, which passed with a unanimous vote. The BHLC is proud to have played a role in ensuring the first middle school coming to Boyle Heights in 80 years.
